Alternatives to the Knik Arm Crossing
Two principal alternatives to the Knik Arm bridge were proposed during Environmental Impact
Statement scoping meetings in 2005:
- A package of four non-bridge transportation modes (below) to connect the Mat-Su Valley and Anchorage, and
- Four Anchorage-area approaches through military lands
(further down this page) which avoid the Government Hill neighborhood.
The non-bridge, pro-growth alternative:
- Car/cargo ferry service to Point MacKenzie from Anchorage
- Commuter and cargo rail service between the Mat-Su Valley and Anchorage
- Carpool and vanpool service from the Mat-Su Valley and Anchorage on the Glenn Highway
- Expanded bus and new streetcar service in Anchorage to allow commuters to travel and work
throughout the city.
- Expected cost for all: $100 million

Bridge approaches through military land:
- Post Road/Reeve Boulevard Corridor
- Boniface Parkway Corridor
- Muldoon Road Corridor
- Hiland Road Corridor
- Estimated cost of each approach: Unknown
