It's baa--aak!

Alternatives to the Knik Arm Crossing

Two principal alternatives to the Knik Arm bridge were proposed during Environmental Impact Statement scoping meetings in 2005:

  1. A package of four non-bridge transportation modes (below) to connect the Mat-Su Valley and Anchorage, and
  2. Four Anchorage-area approaches through military lands (further down this page) which avoid the Government Hill neighborhood.
The non-bridge, pro-growth alternative:

  • Car/cargo ferry service to Point MacKenzie from Anchorage
  • Commuter and cargo rail service between the Mat-Su Valley and Anchorage
  • Carpool and vanpool service from the Mat-Su Valley and Anchorage on the Glenn Highway
  • Expanded bus and new streetcar service in Anchorage to allow commuters to travel and work throughout the city.
  • Expected cost for all: $100 million
For more details see the following documents: Bridge approaches through military land:

  • Post Road/Reeve Boulevard Corridor
  • Boniface Parkway Corridor
  • Muldoon Road Corridor
  • Hiland Road Corridor
  • Estimated cost of each approach: Unknown
