Dear Senator ___ or Representative ___: I am writing to encourage you to invest in our existing transportation system and in public transportation before spending our tax dollars on costly new roads and bridges. I live in ___ and I am concerned about (select the applicable items): o the safety of our existing roadways. For the past five years, an average of five people each year have died driving the Seward Highway o potholes, ruts, rough pavement and poor drainage, which causes undue wear and tear on my vehicle(s). One study by the American Society of Civil Engineers found that Alaskan motorists pay an additional $212 per year on car maintenance because 1/3 of our roads are in poor condition. o congestion on our existing roadways. It has taken me XX minutes to get through just one intersection in Anchorage/Mat-Su on my way to work. o developing public transportation options to connect Anchorage and the Mat-Su borough including commuter rail with an Internet connection, ferries to Point MacKenzie, better transit within Anchorage so commuters can get around, and well-organized carpools/vanpools on the Glenn Highway. o the Alaska Marine Highway System. Ferries are the life blood for our coastal communities. The Knik Arm Bridge, Gravina Bridge, and Juneau Road would consume more than half of our transportation budget for the next several years if we proceed with DOT's current plans. Please do whatever you can to shift this funding back to the projects most critical for Alaskan communities. Fix it first! Name Address Phone Email
